Did you know that back pain is the most common complaint for people who consult a physiotherapist? Around 90% of Dutch population suffers from back pain at one point in their lives. Despite that fact, only few people know what back pain exactly is.

Back pain has different causes. It often arises due to a combination of several factors: overweight, age, smoking, moving too little, moving the wrong way, a imbalance between abdominal and back muscles, overloading, stress etc.

There are different types of back pain. Most types of back pain are no cause for concern. You will notice a daily decrease in pain and easier motion of the back within one week. Complaints often disappear on their own within 2 to 6 weeks.

If you are experiencing back pain you can start by taking a pain killer and an anti-inflammatory pill during the first two days. This will moderate the pain and stop the inflammation. Try to keep your movements as normal as possible despite of the pain. Resting will often make the pain worse, while keep moving will speed up the recovery.

If you’re still having severe pain after one week, does movement still doesn’t come easy after 3 weeks, are you experiencing loss of power in your leg, a numb feeling in your leg, is the pain radiating towards your knee or do you have trouble urinating, then you should consult a physiotherapist or a doctor.
